shibori sutra
homage to Fukumoto-sensei

Kyoto, Japan

800 x 800
Shibori dyeing on central panel;
Ai-zome (indigo) dyed cotton and threads, bamboo

In 1987 I received a scholarship to study and work with traditional and contemporary textile artisans and fiber artists in Japan. I worked with two of Kyoto’s most celebrated contemporary artisans of Shibori and Ai-zome. This piece was executed under the expert guidance of Shihoko Fukumoto. The panel found its place much later, mounted upon a dip-dyed ai-zome scarf.
