gratitude to my teachers
A benevolent crowd of artists, teachers,
philosophers, and scientists has shaped my life - far too many
to list here. It is with a deep bow of gratitude that I mention here
those whose influence changed my creative life in some significant way.
Wei Wu Wei
- for writing words that were tailor-made for my brain,
that knocked the bottom out of the bucket labeled 'me'.
That threw me into a rude awakening.

Jiddu Krishnamurti
- for showing me the how to find the right question
– and how to hold on to it relentlessly.
For the legacy of his schools and study centers:
beautiful places where one can sense the sacred and meet exceptional
minds.

David Bohm
- for his brilliant mind, his friendship and patience.
For explaining creativity to me. And for being so wonderfully
human.

Frederick Franck - whose Zen of Seeing is still my bible after decades.
For showing me how to see without shadows. For opening my eyes to the wonders
and miracles in front of me, and for affirming that artisanship is sacred practice.
Read about him and his work here:
New York Times
John Daido Loori
- for creating a Zen path which includes artisanship as practice.

And for his awakened eye: see his exquisite photographs at

Namgyal Rinpoche
- for showing me that art (and everything else) is about
awakening (and nothing else).

Nisargadatta Maharaj
- for unarguable logic and the ruthlessness of clarity.
My favourite Advaita-Zen master.

and compassion.

Arno Stern
- "How can the simple and beneficial play of
painting be made accessible to all? By creating conditions necessary to
the surmounting of prejudices and inhibitions. Everyone is capable, like
a small child, of devoting him or herself to this play when it occurs in
a space designed with that in mind. ..."

Art at Findhorn
- "Life is sustained through enthusiasm for life and
‘the will to do’ (Assagioli). Both of these qualities can be accessed
more easily through artistic work than through most other activities,
and they seem instrumental in finding health, purpose, self-esteem and
fulfillment in life. When we experience life as a work of art, the
process of creating becomes part of our conscious, ongoing human
development. Healing can occur when we take the responsibility for our
creation, accepting it and appreciating it unconditionally. One of the
main goals of the training is to develop and refine artistic skills
which cultivate and express the above qualities. ..."

Arts and Consciousness
- "As artists, we create objects and events that
alter and enrich human consciousness. As teachers, we help our students
discover their own, most profound sources of creativity and life. As
healers, we use creativity and passion to promote well-being. We help
the world by discovering and expressing the sacred within ourselves.

Zen Arts
- "Creativity is our birthright as human beings - its
seeds are manifest in whatever we do. Because our creativity reflects
our inherent nature, the practice of the arts is intimately woven into
the fabric of Zen training. Zen teachers have always used the arts as a
way of teaching the buddhadharma, with the result that, over the
centuries, the Zen tradition has developed numerous ways for helping
students understand and cultivate their inherent creativity. ..."
